Re: Fostering a calf

Hi Natasha - ~We had to put one of our cows in the crush to let her own calf suck this spring. Mother and calf did eventually become bonded (it may be easier as it was her own calf) and have been turned out for a couple of months. Bonding takes time, but I'm sure you will be rewarded in the end. Bes...

Re: New rules for TB at shows

About three years there was a dispersal sale of a very large dairy herd (in Hertfordshire I think) in a four year testing parish. The cattle were dispersed throughout the UK and when they were subjected to TB testing by their new owners a large number of these cattle were found to be reactors (we kn...

Re: New rules for TB at shows

Hi Natasha, Don't be too complacent, TB can strike at any time. We have been clear for three years and decided to have a closed herd several years ago. We don't' hire out bulls, buy in cattle, take cattle to shows and when out at grass our cattle graze where no cattle have been for years and nor are...

Re: Beefing my bull

Hi Colin, I would advise against sending him to a commercial market, you will get very little for him, possibly as low as £100. Jarretts - a large commercial abattoir in Somerset pay well and you will receive a realistic payment for him within a few days of slaughter. I don't know of large commercia...

Re: new style passport

Our new style passports are in A4 two ring binders each in its own A4 plastic insert....the pedigree certificates are in an A5 two ring binder. You will get both A4 and A5 plastic inserts from W H Smith. PS: A3 size is double A4, so they'll be too big. DCS did have A5 two ring binders in maroon with...

Re: Marketing my cattle

Locally reared Dexter beef - there's nothing else to beat it. We've worked damned hard promoting our own beef and have a number of diverse customers. Look for every opportunity - last week I was walking past a coffee house and noticed they were advertising roast lamb - a new idea for them selling Su...

Re: Steer prices

Rob Seed purchased from Cotswold Seeds in Spring 2008 - £1170 for a 4 year ley x 23 acres - all cultivations done by ourselves. To date no fertiliser used as the clovers are releasing their own nitrogen into the soil. It is our intention this spring to take some soil samples to check P&K levels ...

Re: Steer prices

Forget selling Dexters through the commercial markets, buyers will not pay what they are worth. Local farmers could not understand why, when we had to change direction in 2002, we decided to retain our Dexters, selling our 50 AAX cows with Charolais X calves at foot and 500 Welsh Mules to farmers in...

Let's have some feedback on what prices 'High Street' butchers are paying for Dexter beef.

Re: New Start Advice

Andrew - You are obviously in a totally different situation than we are here in the North Cotswolds, where we have very actively promoted our Dexter beef and slaughter an average of four home bred animals a month, going out to chefs, butchers and a farm shop. The herd has been built up steadily sinc...

Re: Beef meeting Sat 24th Sept

A big thank you to John and Pat Garratt for hosting the National Dexter Beef Network workshop yesterday in Haywards Heath. Rob & I travelled to West Sussex and we were not to be disappointed. We saw some lovely Dexters and Sussex cattle - a credit to John and Pat. Both of us had a most enjoyable...

Re: Dexters get a mention in yorkshire post

Graham - Great story. Brilliant publicity for Dexter beef. We've just taken on a new butcher and before I approached him many of his customers had been asking for Dexter beef and he didn't know where to get it locally (we're about 10 miles away), so there is definitely a growing demand for Dexter be...
