Re: Bull Semen

AI advertised bulls need to have linear assessment, not bulls for hire. As for the quality of bulls on AI in the past, its people who can afford to take semen who did it. the quality of the bull did not always matter. What is the difference between hiring and AI in terms of numbers covered as AI do...

Re: Bull Semen

I would have thought that the cost of putting a bull on AI in the first place would ensure a reasonable degree of quality control.

Re: Bull Semen

There seems to be a general shortage of new bulls coming on AI especially red ones. There must also be lots of straws collected over the years that folk no longer want. I was counting up the ones I have stored with Genus from various bulls £700 worth at DCS member prices. Put non-specific ad on my w...

Re: a plug for our yorkshire neighbours

Yes, worrying times ahead. I hate the idea of intensive farming it's not good for people, the animals or the environment. Population worries me and I really don't like live animal exports for slaughter purposes either. From the beef income alone you need about 300 head of Dexters on the ground at an...

Re: Johne's Vaccine

It isn't really cost effective in monetary terms to keep up the health scheme membership with a small herd but government intervention in disease prevention/elimination in livestock seems to be of increasing importance and having got there, it seems a bit pointless to give it up. Perhaps you can neg...

Johne's Vaccine

Don’t vaccinate myself so was not aware of the following until I received my newsletter for the bTB scheme to which I subscribe. The TB test as you know comprises two injections – one for avian and the other for bovine and a comparison made. Leaving aside the explanation for brevity it would seem th...

Re: Calf Dehorning Crates

Yes mine is an IAE but not so shiny now. Yes the calves are much bigger in the video. The one vet who had the accident won't use it now and expects someone to restrain the calf. Am aware that this site is also popular with those new to cattle. As you are probably aware Stephanie believe you also hav...

Re: Calf Dehorning Crates

As I had already been warned it IS easy to end up hanging a calf!!! This could have happened today! We had already decided we were going to put a false bottom in it but wanted to use it once and decide how deep it needed to be. It needs to be about 3 inches for our calves, which will hopefully make...
