Re: Dexter Height on Breed Standard

It would make sense to have two height standards, one for short and another for non-short. Currently, the standard would accomodate short cows up to 44 inches or short bulls up to 48 inches, despite such animals having the genetic potential to breed much bigger progeny. These could be way above the...

Re: Dexter Height on Breed Standard

For many years Dexter females were described as having preferred height of 38 to 42", with 36 deemed acceptable. We can do this without bulldog genes, have true breeding animals. If anyone wants larger animals for economic reasons then change to a breed that meets these requirements. Duncan Th...

Re: Dexter Height on Breed Standard

Jayne Paynter's dwarfs were mostly around 40-41 inches; her nons were often in the 45-47 inch range. One of the reasons her animals did well in the show ring (apart from quality :) ) was that she kept the dwarf gene but used larger dwarfs, which looked more proportionate. The larger nons got kept f...

Re: New Outlet for Dexter Beef

The most difficult thing to do is getting people to try the beef in the first place. I know there are some that sell considerably more but the work involved to me just doesn't seem worth the effort - truthfully you could earn more on the checkouts at Tesco. There is a limit, you cannot subsidise oth...

Re: VAT

I know of someone down here doing the same sort of thing. They told him that he couldn't possibly make a living out of farming and de-registered him for VAT. However, I know of other people who are definately not making a living out of farming who have been registered for years without any issues.

Re: New Outlet for Dexter Beef

Not having purchased beef for a while now, I was shocked by how much they are charging for the so called cheaper cuts in the local supermarket this Christmas. I have to say, I haven't noticed any decline in demand for more expensive cuts from my customers but then again, I am not selling to people w...

Absolutely, that is Bernard Llewelyn (aka the general). Lovely chap, met him at the shows, lives not too far from me, breeds Longhorns.

Re: BVD testing

I am surprised there are any that didn't get tested when support was available. It was very limited support £4 per test per animal but you still had to pay the scheme operator membership fees and vets bills for taking the blood. There is a link on my website where you can download scheme/disease inf...

I agree Rob, you have got to keep your costs down. I run a 40 year old (tax free) Landrover but don't cut corners with my cows.

Re: BVD testing

We joined a health scheme last year for BVD, IBR, Leptospirosis and Johne's Disease. The Welsh Assembly Government subsidised us for the BVD and Johne's testing which helped us on our way.

Re: Steer prices

There is a third option, other than increasing size or price; With regards to the original subject, I don't tend to think that the Dexter breed's main financial disadvantage is not due to the variable costs such as tagging and slaughter, although they are an important aspect that need paying for ei...

Re: Steer prices

well looking at that price list the most proffitable way to make money out of dexters is to sell the weaned calf at 8months old av weight 180kg and for the sum of £315. easy money no point keeping them on to 24 months to only get £707 all that extra work etc thats 3 times the age but just over twic...

Re: Steer prices

It isn't a question of market value. It is a question of what they cost to produce. If they cost more to produce than you receive back then surely it is sensible not to breed them at all (other than for your own personal use). This is the fundamental problem with the Dexter breed - people lose their...
