Re: pushing them too quick to finish
I don't know about the bread and potatoes bit - they are not pigs! Whether to feed or not depends on your ethical stance and resources available. I assume we are talking about winter feeding here and not shutting them in a building all year round. There is general aura of bullshit about the thrifty ...

Re: nearest group to Northwick
I don't know what the distance is to the North Yorks area but the other alternative is the Mid Wales and Shropshire. We have already have a member from the Cheshire area, Northwick is about 58 miles from Welshpool.

Re: Halter training!!
We find that a week or so old is the best age to start. It helps if the mother is halter trained, the calves don't struggle, they just follow their mum about.ayrt1010 wrote:Eve is nearly 3 months old. I'm far too soft to halter train, I can't bear to see her struggling!!

Re: New Outlet for Dexter Beef
Somebody recently posted a suggestion to form a co operative for Dexter producers.I would suggest thats the way to go but I'm thinking that it would need somebody with plenty of time and knowledge in how to go about it. Andy There is one already - it is called the National Dexter Beef Network

Re: Advice please
Hi Andy, welcome to the forum. If you have decided that Dexter cattle are for you then I would look on the Dexter Cattle Society web site and find your nearest Dexter Group. For a very small membership fee (you do not need to join the Society at this stage or own a Dexter) you will be put in touch w...

Re: First return of Dexters to Ireland
On a seperate subject a copy of the Cardiff project has been made available to me. It is not any of the versions previously offered on this board but the original 263 page report. It is a shame that this had to come from outside the UK society even though this full report has been made available to...

Re: First return of Dexters to Ireland
If you want a small animal just (a) wean them early, (b) put them onto old leys and keep them there, and (c) put them in calf early. All the leys in the olden times would have been (by modern standards) low energy, so to restrain animals to the sizes that were applicable back then, you are in effec...

Re: Too many wrong bulls left entire
The problem with linear scoring in respect of bulls is that it only judges the bull. It is possible to strike lucky and breed a lovely looking bull that will score well on the score sheet but with no prepotency. The bull scheme where parents and offspring were assessed although it did not prove popu...

The question is if you were buying say a calf, would you be happy if the vendor put £130 on the price?bjreroberts wrote:Sounds cheap to me, try getting a plumber out on 2 separate days for half an hour and I bet there are a lot that would charge you more than £130.

Re: TB TESTS, ARE VETS TAKING THE MICK!
Hi, My view is that tb tests for small numbers are extremely expensive, and therefore take most of the profit out of selling them, or put people off hiring bulls if they only have a small number of cattle. Also why is there such a variation, I know of people being charged anything from £50 to £130 ...
