Re: Best/Worst Dexter Cross

We have crossed our few Dexters with our Belted Galloways without issues so far, and are looking forward to using the heifer cross breds as replacements which go to the beltie bull this year. We were wanting to speed up the growth rates of the Beltie, maintain the good eating quality of the beef we ...

Re: Carcass Price ?

We occasionally sell to a local butcher at farmers weekly price for the week it was killed + 5% for being grass fed, native bred and local, would like to increase this to 10% but we don't have a regular enough supply to negotiate a higher price. This would be for Belties and Dexters. Hope that helps...

Re: couriers

Hi All,

This thread is over a year old now so I wondered if anyone has any more up to date advice/experiences on the best way to send chilled/frozen meat round the country?

Many thanks

Re: Selling straight to abbatoir?

Dear All, Many thanks for all your reply's, the butcher we supply locally has come back to me wanting the extra's after all so they now all have 'homes' before the winter. It is good to know however that there remains a healthy market for this beef nationally so next time I wont be worried about fin...

Selling straight to abbatoir?

Dear All, We have a bunch of steers finished now, a few too many for our own customers and rather than feeding through the winter then beefing at over 30month later on (which is what we've done in the past) I was wondering if selling straight to the abattoir is worth considering, or if anyone knows ...

Re: Cross bred Dexters

That's great news, I am so exited about our venture, I picked both breeds for good reasons (I hope) so far it is proving successful but we also haven't bred from the heifer cross breds yet although I plan to. The result wanted is obviously the best of both, native suckler herd which thrives and fini...

Re: dexter crossing

Hi, I am sorry Clive to hear of your TB news, very sad news. Continuing the cross breeding topic, We are the other way round when it comes to cross breeding, as we are primarily a pedigree Belted Galloway herd which produces beef with the whole herd living out all year round including calving, being...

Re: Heifer calf born 22nd of march 2013 - can it be bulling?

I have also had a heifer bull at 3.5 - 4 months old which was a surprise when we first had the Dexters, I knew they were early maturing as this was one of the reasons we choose the Dexter but wasn't quite prepared for 4 months let alone 11 weeks!! We now are on high alert having just put Mr Bull bac...

Re: Calving!

Hello there, Has anyone any cases of Schmallenburg (or how ever you spell it!) ? The full spectrum of effects of this are still being discovered, we have had one Beltie calf deformed and confirmed, the rest so far show no external signs and Dexters will start to calve this week, so keeping a watchfu...

Re: best age to wean?

Thanks for your replies. We have decided to wean the calves at approx 10months old and see how this works out in our system. In previous years we have weaned earlier with no obvious side-effects and stock have always looked well however we have no idea if weaning earlier hindered their growth and if...

best age to wean?

All our Dexters and Belties live outdoors all year round and fed on grass/haylage only. As we do not feed any creep feed or concentrates to the young or old I am interested in finding the most effective time for weaning to avoid stress and growth checks etc, and also interested in working out the mo...

Re: Calves out in winter?

Hi, We keep and calve all our native cattle outside where they are much healthier and happier overall, but that is why we choose them! We feed them only haylage with mineral licks available and there are plenty of big hedges to shelter under from the worst of the weather. Our last Dexter heiffer is ...

Hi At the time I started the thread I didn't know what the KO% would be but my second message refered to it. (62% and 65% saleable meat of DW) Yes I'm interested in all facts, figures and discussions, when I can get online to read my emails as we are suffering from rural broadband frustrations!! I c...
