Re: Dexter Junk Food
Just found this old thread when trying to decide if potato haulms are safe to feed, since potato season is upon us - answer NO. Very helpful. Went around yesterday pulling ragwort - good time of year for it at my latitude, yellowing nicely to show itself, but no sign of seed. We pull masses every ye...

I've just agreed to pay £845 +VAT for the IAE yearling/dexter crush, galvanized from Allans of Gillock in Inverness.

Re: Ifor Williams 12ft trailer
Thanks Stephanie and Clive - good advice. I didn't like the look of the DP range axle either. And I had suspected 12ft was too big. I need to buy something before the end of the summer when our first steer goes for slaughter, so I'll keep looking. Stephanie - Abergavenny is a bit far, but I have fon...

Re: Ifor Williams 12ft trailer
Should read "3 max Dexters OR 2 max Welsh ponies" - ie not together!

Re: Ifor Williams 12ft trailer
Thanks Mark - I've contacted the trailer seller, but could use some advice on trailer size. How many Dexters could one fit in a TA510 12ft? Or should I be looking at a 10ft? And would a Welsh pony or two be happy in a 6ft high trailer, or do they need the 7ft headroom? Basically I need a trailer for...

Re: Wish i hadnt done that!
Thanks for posting that! Best of luck with the tidy up. Reminds me of the time I came across a line of stopped cars on our single track road (on Skye) with some cattle at the front of the queue. "Tourists", I thought, "I'll soon sort this out", and approached the jam full of self...

Bluebell toxicity
Blowing a gale here on Skye today, so I thought I'd let the cows into a wood they've used for shelter in the past. Trouble is that at this time of year it's carpeted with bluebells (hyacinthoides non scripta). The cows immediately started munching the bluebell leaves, sending me rushing back to goog...

Re: EBLEX Better Returns Programme
Sounds good - just registered, but am waiting to see if the "The orgainisation for the English beef and sheep meat industry" will bump me when they realise I'm on the Isle of Skye. Hope not.

Re: IAE yearling/dexter crush for sale
Thanks for those replies - reassuring to hear. Once I've recovered from the cost, I'm looking forward to the extra functionality and safety of proper crush, and hopefully the appreciation of my vet (TB and BVD testing behind a gate with a halter was not a stress-free experience).

Re: IAE yearling/dexter crush for sale
I missed this one, but I am looking for an IAE yearling crush. (After a long and futile attempt to secure a 12' calving gate from Ireland.) Just looking for some advice on price. I've been quoted 825 + VAT straight off with no haggling/sob story by my local supplier in Inverness for a new galvanised...

Re: Schmallenberg virus (SBV)
Agree with Duncan's mother, and reminds me of a phrase favoured by an Olympian rowing friend of mine "Control the controllables". We used to laugh at him for that, but it makes sense if you think about it. BTW I'm a new member, and have just started a small herd on the Isle of Skye (herd n...
