I have taken a bit of a gamble on eBay and bought a job lot of halters which includes 59 off 'cow ties'. I have done a Google search and found them being sold by various rope product distributors but nothing on their use. Can anyone tell me what these are used for? They are made from 12mm polypropy...

Can anybody recommend a cost effective way to dispose of haylage wrap? If I use all my haylage I will have approximately 60 wrappers from mini hestons. Small quantities I have stuck in my bin at home, but I am now using too many to do this and would prefer it to be recycled. I have looked at Solway...

Thanks, I'm off to buy one then. I have been meaning to get one for sometime, but I need to go away for a couple of days and cannot find enough cattle sitters to arrange feeding twice a day.

Without a feeder they just lie on any quantity greater than their immediate requirements and waste it.

Clive, how often are you filling the ring feeders for your cattle outside?

Normally I feed mine once a day on the ground, just enough so it is not wasted and let them fill their bellies on the grass. Obviously with the snow I am now haveing to feed twice a day as they cannot get to the grass.

I had planned to move some gates and the crush to the current field where the cattle are located, but abandoned my plans when I saw all the black ice.

Having said that it has not been that cold yet, the tap on the field normally freezes but has been fine until now.

On a visit to Denmark last year, I was astounded to see several instances of cattle enclosed by nothing more than a two strand permanent electric fence!

Tim, I bought my crush for £40 from a collective sale, all it needed was the wood floor replacing. A neighbour recently bought one for £30 which needed a bit of welding but he got that done for £30. Also look on eBay there are a few in there currently at £100-200, the last one I watched to the end ...

I always try allow plenty of time when moving my Dexters, I take the view it takes as long as it takes. So when I had my annual TB test this week I allowed 3 hours before the vet arrived on Tuesday. For the reading today the vets were meant to ring and confirm the time yesterday, when I rang them a...

Lovely photos as always Stephanie.

I have just got in from an afternoon of fencing an despite all the rain it is only the surface that is wet. From three inches down I was having to use the fencing bar to get through every further inch as the clay underneath is still dry as a bone and rock solid.

As already stated it depends upon your local market conditions and local competition for land for equine use. I have to pay quite a lot £100-£120 per acre per year for fields between 8 acres and 12 acres in size (well fenced with mains water) as they can get a lot more if they rented the land for e...

Well done Penny, it is great to see Dexters on TV.

I see we can also add David Dimbleby to the list of celebrity keepers of Dexters http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol....952.ece although not quite the type of publicity we want!

My apologies if this has been covered by an earlier topic, I have done a search but cannot find anything. In previous years I have always fed my cattle hay over winter, but this year I've had 40 heston bales of haylage. Once opened, what is the best way to maintain the usable life of the bale? Unwr...

Checking the cattle this afternoon, I found one of my Dexters licking an ant hill. I am not sure whether she was after the eggs or the ants themselves, but she was definitely doing it on purpose and not just being curious.

Has anyone else seen this before?

Take a look at http://www.kenmills.co.uk/ I think they are the people that make the machines to re-pack small bale haylage. I can understand the problem you are trying to solve, but doesn't the solution already exist in round bale plastic wrapped haylage/silage? Edited By bjreroberts on 1248449389
