Re: Beryl Rutherford Memorial Fund

Just looking back through threads to see what I have missed ........

Has anyone asked Fiona about this? I am interested to know what it has been used for, or if it has not, what are the plans for the fund, ie in what area is it likely to be spent?

Re: Woodmagic Cattle - any for sale?

I think it would be particularly helpful to all interested in the use of the 'historic' semen if the DCS published criteria under which the historical semen would be released. At the moment all I can find is Long Term Society Semen: only available to Members for special breeding programmes and speci...

Re: feeding Dexters overwinter

Firstly I suspect there will be a difference whether they are in or out. All ours are out all the time. They only come in to calve and then they're out again. We have two lots at the moment in two separate 6 acre fields. Herd 1 - 7 cows (aged from 9.5 - 3yrs) and one bull - Fed 1 small bale of hay p...

Blackmagic Blackberry

Just a cheeky little pointer (which I'm sure will be removed if disapproved of) to the sale side of the website. Blackberry, a 16 month old bull calf, will be coming on shortly. He has pure Woodmagic bloodlines. Lots of photos available so stand by! Movement test done and ready to go. Happy New Year!

Re: Sell more beef...

The RADAR Cattle Book of 2008 gives the following stats as of 1st June 2008 Dexters 26,587 of a total herd of 8,868,469 (Source: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/69220/pb13572-cattlebook-2008-090804.pdf) Latest stats, although I cant find a figure for Dexters...

Re: Kicking Cows!

I was so shocked that I neither noticed the name or whipped out my mobile to film it. What I did notice is that they didn't seem to have the usual showmans 'camp' - chair, buckets brushes thermos etc so I think they may have been showing other cattle as well which may have explained why there was no...

Kicking Cows!

We slid off for a couple of hours this morning and went to a local show to see what was what and saw some Dexters in the lines. Nobody was with them to chat to so we just stood looking and talking about legs and topline and all the usual things you do. Whilst looking at them their keeper or show per...

Re: Hello, and start up question.

Ben, Also meant to add, if you are getting stock from more than one place, keep them separated for 3-4 weeks as a quarantine. Once you have yr herd set up do the same thing for all incoming stock.

Re: Hello, and start up question.

Hello Ben, May I add to the above, the health of the herd. We recently learnt the hard way about not checking the health of incoming stock so, I would ask to see the medicine book for the stock for the last 12 months. I would also get a vet to take bloods, which I would be prepared to pay for, and c...

Re: No Suck

As a slight aside, if you are relatively inexperienced as we still are , I can't recommend doing a lambing course enough. The vets usually put them on at certain times of the year. Nobody seems to do calving courses but having the confidence to lube up and very gently get in there I found a huge hel...

Re: Ear Tags

We use Fearings and they have been fine but I am thinking of changing away from the metal secondaries. Problem we have is possibly caused by not putting in right, but on calves, the secondaries have to be put in to allow room for growth so they can slip round the ear (from 12o/c to 11, 10 or worse, ...
