Re: how to get a calve to suck

Victor, I think Louisa covers it all. When less experienced we did stomach tube a calf after about 6 hours but we did it in ignorance. As was explained to me you need to get the suck reflex going in the calf and tubing does nothing for this as they tend to sleep after having a full stomach. Typicall...

Thanks Rob.

Cow Hunting!

Does anyone know the whereabouts of the following:-

F32603 Woodmagic Squab UK364848 400145 F OWN10 435 Alive 14/08/2007

OWN10 is effectively a miscellaneous designation where the DCS was notified of the sale by a member but have no records as to who bought it.

Thanks

Tim

Re: colustrum

The Dam's colostrum is definitely best but sometimes they don't seem to suckle very quickly. As has been said before on here the calf's gut wall at birth is quite porous so the colostrum is important as some of the goodness from it passes through the gut wall. After 12 hrs (I think) the porosity les...

Re: Livestock Water Bowsers

Don't lose sight of what the quad can actually pull and do so safely. We have a Honda 420 and its towing limit is 386Kg (thats the weight of the trailer plus the load it is carrying. If the tank on the trailer is part full the free surface effect in the tank will affect the handling of the quad and ...

Herd Health

I was going to add this on to an earlier thread but thought, although it's related, perhaps a separate thread would be more appropriate. In Robin's earlier thread one of his concerned was the low price for Dexters. The ability to charge more for the same or similar product is often a case of differe...

Re: Is Linear Assessment linked to production and/or longevi

This is a great thread. Making me think! I have no previous experience of LA, being new to cattle but have every intention of getting ours done as and when possible. I think, if I understand this correctly, it will give us the following in the first instance:- 1) a snapshot of the condition/quality ...

Hello victor,
Bit confused after your post in November on a very similar subject? Are there any particular hinges you are wanting to know?

What about approaching everyone who has a pedigree dexter for sale on the site and get them to increase their price by the same amount to a price that is deemed acceptable?

......breeders stop selling to smallholders/people new to cattle. WHAT!? Re: Exporting Dexter Semen to France

Is the bulls performance not measured by its progeny?

(Or is it the way he sashays in round the barn door in something well cut and double breasted and holds a nonchalant pose before setting about his duties bringing the crowd to its feet as he does so! :))

Sorry its been a long week!

Re: Cattle Transport

We have spent a lot of time since our OP trying to figure out how to collect a bull, including trying to do it ourselves. To do so legally, we would have to have:- 1) a tacho fitted to the Landrover (approx £750 we are told), 2) a stock trailer that complies with the ventilation regs (rather than a ...
