Could it be that she has been given more nuts than she is used to? I have seen similar sorts of situations when a cow has not been used to having much hard feed and then been given some as an energy builder after calving. A few are good as a welcome reward, but too many can cause the sitaution you ...

Years ago I bought in a group of dexters, and one of the bull calves had a distinctly silver coat at approx 6 months of age. They were in poor condition, and I wondered whether it was mineral deficiency, as with good nutrition he turned black. Definite dexter, no chance of having mixed with another...

I may be wrong, but I think the Woodbank herd also keep Shetland cattle (black and white) so there could be some illicit liason in her past pedigree?!

Jean, I would disagree about you being too soft by weaning at 5 months. I personally think that cow and calf would be much happier if you left them together a lot longer. If cows are left to do it by them selves they will naturally wean their calves anywhere between 6 and 10 months of age, giving t...

Steph is absolutely right, it is a problem which I am constantly encountering when approached to bail someone out. This is why I personally never sell at sales, as I like to know potential purchasers and give them as much advice as possible before they commit themselves. I am also aware that I make...

Yes, well done. I have been so busy that I was not aware what was going on or the date until my mail order enquiries soared! Thank you for producing such good beef to make the chef so enthusiastic, it is benefitting us all.

I would like to know why, when a type 1 & 8 combined vaccine should be available from mid-summer, that we still will not be able to use this despite type 1 being so prevalent in France? The powers that be have decided that this can only be used once there is an outbreak of Type 1 in England. Ta...

Thanks for all this useful imput. I don't use Parcelforce itself, I use the Royal Mail Special delivery service which I have been pleased with but costs £20.95 for up to 10kg exc.packaging, so rather prohibitive. I did look at Business Post as they were recommended to me, but got no where on the we...

Does anyone who does mail order on a fairly regular basis have any couriers that they are happy to recommend? After trying quite a few over the years, all seem to find it impossible to be 100% reliable. I now never agree to deliver anything on a Friday after suffering from " knock off early on...

I'm being very slow on this, as I have only recently had time to sit and look at the Bulletin. Not much has been commented on it, so I feel it deserves another congratulation for being full of very good, useful information. It has provided good articles to help those starting out as well as getting...

Spoke to my abattoir , apparently already changed, but so many forms to fill and seperation of carcasses etc, that my local abattoir is not going to change from 30 months limit. They hope, in months (years!) to come that these regulations will be relaxed to make it easier to do, then they would be ...

Well done, yet more publicity for the Dexter!. I was meant to be providing beef for a programme "Taste the Nation" which is coming out in the summer but being shot now. However, unfortunately the contestants were not allowed to use meat of their choice in the first rounds, but what the pr...

The youngest heifer I have ever heard of calving was just 11 and a half months old when she calved!(Caesarian). I certainly have stock coming into season when they are only 3-3and a half months old.Because of this I tend to put those with heifer calves at foot in with the bull a bit earlier, so tha...

Maybe I am wrong, but I think the majority of people who put comments on this site are against dexters getting too big whether beef breeders or not and whether for or against short-legged dexters. Getting rid of the chrondroplasia gene does not necessarily mean bigger dexters, look at Beryl's herd....
