3 yr old dexter for meat

Post by sues »

Hi - we have a heifer that is 3 & has had 1 calf but failed to get in calf this time, I am thinking of having her killed for the freezer but not sure what the meat will be like?? Any advice would be helpful!!

Hello Sues,

The meat should be fantastic, probably better than a 2 year old steer.

The older they get the better the meat, generally. my customers still tell me about an 8 year old cow we butchered

BUT if she is your favourite and she has just missed 1 calving should you be so hasty!! another chance is always an option.

too soft dom

Thanks - unfortunaley we have lost some grazing this time so I have to reduce numbers anyway so I am trying to not let my heart rule my head!! We also have a cow that is 9 this time who hasn't held, maybe we should send her as well???
